The oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty is marked by continuous evolution and unwavering dedication to excellence. As the torch of leadership passes within the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), we are proud to recognize the contributions of Immediate Past President Dr. Bernard Costello and look forward to supporting Dr. Pushkar Mehra as he steps into the role of ABOMS President for 2023-2024.
Honoring Dr. Bernard Costello’s contributions
Under the astute leadership of Immediate Past President Bernard J. Costello DMD, MD, FACS, ABOMS completed several initiatives, most notably the Examination Preparatory Portal—an interactive online study tool to help applicants seeking ABOMS certification prepare for and pass the Qualifying Examination, and the implementation of the ABOMS Portal mobile app for applicants and Diplomates to easily access information regarding their application status or membership.
In addition to these supportive measures, a record number of Diplomates completed the ABOMS Annual Registration during Dr. Costello’s tenure. His commitment to enhancing the experiences of Diplomates and applicants alike has left an indelible mark on the ABOMS legacy.
Welcoming Dr. Pushkar Mehra
As we bid a grateful farewell to Dr. Costello, we eagerly welcome Pushkar Mehra, DMD, MS, FACS. Dr. Mehra’s expertise spans from the operating room at Boston Medical Center, where he is Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, to the academic sphere at the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where he serves as a Professor and the Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Mehra is well-accustomed to leadership roles within the specialty; he previously served on the ABOMS Board of Directors and held positions at the Commission on Dental Accreditation and the Massachusetts Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The author of multiple medical and dental journals and textbook publications, Dr. Mehra’s editorial acumen speaks volumes of his capability to guide the ABOMS into new frontiers.
As the new President of ABOMS, Dr. Mehra aims to uphold the rigorous standards of the OMS specialty while also working to better support ABOMS Diplomates as leaders within the medical industry. With a focus on maintaining the integrity of the board-certification process, a deep understanding of the OMS specialty, and an openness to adaptability, Dr. Mehra is dedicated to fostering the specialty’s growth and the advancement of the field. His confidence in the collective strength of the Board’s distinguished doctors and the dedicated administrative staff is a testament to the collaborative spirit that exemplifies the mission of ABOMS.
